Certified Timber Graders

DSC07796
The Main thing you need to know is if you want us to cut live edge slabs or dimensional timber.

A combination of the 2 is pretty common.

Once you've got that sorted I can help you with what sizes to cut for what project you want to use the timber for.

We have on staff arborists and timber graders.

This means we can get your trees on the ground, mill them to usable sizes and grade the timber for use as an engineered product.
Milling is the main focus of our business, our preference is to arrive when the trees are down.

We Turn Your Fallen Trees To There Highest Value

Milling capability

For our On-site work we use a Lucas mill 10-30
For Dimensional Cutting:
We can do any size between 250mm high and 500mm wide
Ideally we keep it below or at 250x250 as it's a more efficient cut.
We can go out to 7 meters in length but keeping cuts straight can become difficult.
Ideally we cut 5.4 meter barrels and below. There fast to load into the mill and provide good options if you'd like to break the length down further later.
We can change the dimension of the cut at certain stages of log processing, we will work with you to put together a cut list.
For Slabbing
We can slab a log out to 1.25 meters wide and 160 mm thick.

Note: For customers considering a combination of slabs and lumbar just keep in mind it does take to 10/15 minutes to alter the mill for the different cut.

Milling Rates

We work on hourly rate, if you'd like to swap timber for labour we do so at the end of the job and the aggreed value gets deducted from the final invoice.
We do it this way as it removes ambiguity, everyone knows what there getting. And if after the fact when everything's laid out a deal can be struck that works for everyone than thats great.

LoG Prepration/Storage

If you are not quite ready to book us in, but wondering how to preserve your timber to prevent decay and maximise yield.
The main thing is to paint the ends of your logs, there is a specialised end grain sealer.
I wouldn't stress too much about that for 1 off uses. House paint will suffice.

If you are bucking logs yourself, allow a few hundred mm extra, this is for wastage in end splits

If possible when stacking the logs for storage, try keeping them off the ground.

What We need From You

When we come out your logs, theres a couple things that make our life a heap easier.
Water avaliable-We use water on our blades,we can bring it with us. But if possible a tap is ideal, we bring 50 meters of hose with us.
Space-The Mill has a footprint of about 7 meters by 3 meters, if flat grounds avalaible to work on we do make an effort to set up in that location and bring the logs to the mill. Sometimes flat is just out of the question, we can work on some wild angles if needed.
Vehicle access is also obviously nice, but sometimes it unavailable. We can walk the mill in if necessary.

Using Your Timber

We arrange your timber for drying as it comes off the mill.
This is done with sticks between the rows of cut timber to maximise air flow.
We also band the packs with metal straps to limit movment as it drys.
Our Sawyer will consult with you on site regarding the size of the packs youd like.

Ideally for long term storage, keeping your packs in a place out of direct sunlight and with good airflow.
Tin and shade cloth works as well.

Drying time for slabs as a general rule takes 2 summers to get them to a low & stable moisture content level.
Some movement in drying is to be expected, we cut them well oversize to account for this.

Drying For Dimensional Timber varies on the size of the piece, and how you'er going to use it.

If you'd like us to grade your timber so that it can be used for building purposes (Ie:F17) we can do so as it comes out of the mill but the rating we can give it will be far lower than if we come back and grade it 12 months after it was cut.
In grading this is called seasoned and Unseasoned.

Once your timber is dry we can help you to get it dressed if needed.

Notes

We are based in Mount Evelyn Victoria. We will travel pretty much anywhere, but at certain distances we have to charge for accommodation ect.
